How to Fix Common Saltwater Pool Problems
Saltwater pools are a popular alternative to the traditional swimming pool, and it’s easy to see why. There are a variety of economic advantages, as well as health benefits in choosing a saltwater pool. Like all other investments, however, there are responsibilities that must be taken seriously in maintaining a saltwater pool. It should come as no surprise that long-term use of salt causes corrosion. Salt can fade surfaces, stain metals, and corrode surfaces. It is essential to stay alert and dedicated to watching for signs of corrosion and fading. Some surfaces can become safety concerns if they become corroded. Any part of a saltwater pool that has become corroded should be cleaned or replaced immediately. You may also try using zinc anode in the pool system, which protects metals from the saltwater.
Don’t let the fact that these pools are filled with saltwater fool you. Just like any other pool, saltwater pools require chemical treatment. In fact, these types of pools should be treated each week. This includes testing and adjusting salinity levels to between 2500-3500 ppm, chlorine levels to between 2-5 ppm, and total alkalinity to between 80-120 ppm. In addition, the TDS (total dissolved solids) should never be more than 1500 ppm. Without the right chemical balance, the saltwater in the pool could begin to corrode surfaces, experience poor circulation, and more.
Proper pH Levels
Just like a traditional pool system and other water-based systems, the pH level in saltwater pools is extremely important. The pH level is an integral component of the function of the chlorine in the pool, enabling the water to kill bacteria effectively. Your saltwater pool’s pH levels should be between 7.2-7.6, though shooting for 7.4 is best. For increasing pH, try adding alkali in slow increments. For decreasing pH, try adding a dry acid or muriatic acid.
Chlorine Generator Maintenance
The saltwater pool’s saltwater chlorine generator should never be ignored. Maintaining it involves cleaning and replacing, when necessary. The cell of the generator produces chlorine and if it is defective, your chlorine-output will suffer. By regularly checking and maintaining the cell of the generator, the saltwater pool’s performance will always work at its best. With no buildup, the cell should be checked and cleaned every 6-12 months.
